The best YouTube Shorts ideas for brands use what only YouTube can do: video replies to comments, remixes of your own long videos, Shorts series and links to longer content.

A TikTok repost does none of that. Below are twenty ideas built for Shorts, grouped by job, plus a seven step plan. For formats that work on every platform, see our short form video ideas.

The short version

  • Use YouTube only tools. Comment replies, Remix, Shorts series and the Related video link.
  • Point every Short somewhere. Link it to a longer video.
  • Think in series, not one offs. Shorts can now be packaged into seasons.
  • Make it for your ideal viewer. The wrong audience hurts the channel.
  • Judge after a month, not a day.

What makes a good YouTube Shorts idea?

A good idea passes three tests. It hooks in the first second. It is made for the person you want watching your long form videos. And it uses a feature that gives the Short a second life after the swipe.

Most brands miss the last test. On YouTube a Short can lead to a full video or a series, and still be found in search years later.

How are brands doing on YouTube Shorts?

The Dash Social H1 2026 YouTube benchmark tracked 616 brands from July to December 2025. Shorts earned more interactions per video. Regular videos reached more people.

How to plan YouTube Shorts ideas in 7 steps

Step 1: Mine what you have

Check your top videos, comments and search terms. Our guide to repurposing long form video shows how to cut it down.

Step 2: Ask who the idea is for

Before every Short, ask: is this for my ideal viewer, or am I just chasing views? I learned this the hard way. One of my Shorts reached 61 million views and brought in over 120,000 subscribers who only wanted viral clips. My long form views fell by half and it took six months to recover.

Step 3: Write the hook first

Say the promise in the first second. Our list of YouTube hooks and opening lines has 25 to adapt.

Step 4: Choose the length on purpose

Three minutes is a ceiling, not a target. Most ideas work in 20 to 60 seconds. YouTube Help says Shorts over one minute with a copyright claim are blocked.

Step 5: Package a Shorts series

A Shorts series groups episodes into seasons with custom thumbnails and a watch series button. Episodes must be 180 seconds or less, per YouTube Help on shows. It launched in September 2026.

Set a Related video in YouTube Studio. It must be from your own channel. Our guide to end screens, cards and the Related video link covers where to point it.

Step 7: Review after 30 days

In YouTube’s microdrama data, 40% of views came more than 30 days after publishing. Judge formats on a month of results. Our guide to YouTube Analytics shows where each report sits.

Viral subscribers are not your people. Make every Short for your ideal viewer.
