How to Get More Subscribers on YouTube: A 7 Step Guide for Brand Channels (2026)

Subscribers are earned one video at a time. Here is what YouTube says turns viewers into subscribers, what the data shows, and a seven step plan for brand channels.

If you want to know how to get more subscribers on YouTube, start with an uncomfortable truth: nobody subscribes to a brand. They subscribe to a promise that the next video will be worth their time. The brands that grow fast make that promise obvious, keep it every week and ask at the right moment. Everything else is detail.

This guide is for brand and business channels. It uses YouTube's own help pages, statements from YouTube's product team and large channel datasets, and it ends with a checklist you can run every month. If your channel is brand new, start with our guide to starting a YouTube channel for business first.

The short version

  • Subscribers follow viewing. YouTube says recommendations rely primarily on watch history, so the video does the recruiting, not the button.
  • Subscribers will not watch everything. YouTube's growth lead says that 90% of the time, subscribers are not choosing to watch even your best videos.
  • Volume and consistency correlate with growth. In vidIQ's data, channels that kept uploading were far more likely to reach 1,000 subscribers.
  • Series beat one offs. A named format with a release day gives people a reason to come back, which is what subscribing means.
  • Never buy subscribers. Purchased and spam subscribers are removed from your count, and fake engagement can cost you the channel.

Do subscribers still matter on YouTube?

Yes, but not in the way most brands think. YouTube's help page on how recommendations work says the homepage shows "a personalised mix of recommendations, subscriptions and news" and that the system "primarily relies on your watch history". Subscriptions are a signal, not a guarantee of reach.

Todd Beaupré, who leads growth and discovery at YouTube, made the point bluntly on the Inside YouTube podcast in September 2026, as reported by PPC Land:

“Even your best videos, 90% of the time, your subscribed audience isn’t deciding to watch.” Todd Beaupré, YouTube

He also said the most common place subscribers watch a channel is the suggested list on the watch page, not the Subscriptions feed. YouTube Liaison Rene Ritchie has said "there's no algorithm in the subscription feed" (MediaPost), which is why most subscriber views arrive through recommendations. So subscribers matter because they are your most likely viewers, your fastest early signal on a new upload and your most loyal community. They do not replace making each video worth clicking.

How to get more subscribers on YouTube: the 7 steps

1. Write the channel promise in one sentence

Before any tactic, define who the channel is for and what they get every time. "Weekly fifteen minute style edits for busy people" is a promise. "The official home of our brand" is not. Put that sentence in your banner, About section and trailer. YouTube says the channel trailer "offers a preview of your channel so that viewers can learn more and subscribe", and it is shown to people who have not subscribed yet, so it is your best pitch to a new visitor.

2. Find out where your subscribers really come from

YouTube Studio has two reports most brand teams never open. The Subscription source report (Analytics, See more) shows where people clicked Subscribe. The Subscribers report on the content tab shows how many subscribers each content type gained, across videos, Shorts, live streams and posts, which YouTube says helps you see "what content performs best at turning viewers into subscribers". The audience tab also shows what share of watch time comes from subscribers.

Sort your videos by subscribers gained, not views. The videos at the top tell you which promise your audience wants you to keep.

3. Make every video earn the subscribe

Because the watch page is where most subscriptions happen, the video itself is your conversion page. That means a title and thumbnail that make a clear promise, an opening that delivers on it quickly and a structure that keeps people watching. We cover each in detail in our guides to YouTube titles, thumbnails and audience retention. A viewer who reaches the end of a good video is far easier to convert than one who left after a minute.

4. Build series, not one off videos

A subscription is a bet on the next episode, so give people a next episode to bet on. A named series with a fixed format and release day turns a good video into a habit. Marks & Spencer launched Love That in September 2025 as a weekly series of fifteen minute episodes, promoted with cut downs on its other social channels and in store (TheIndustry.fashion), and it passed 13,000 views within five days of launch (Marketing Week). Duolingo built Living With Lily as a serialised Shorts story; its first run earned 10.5 million views and the brand reported YouTube Shorts viewership up 430% year on year (Adweek). Our own client Paul Ribot went from 0 to 30,000 subscribers in 75 days with a focused, repeatable format. For planning, see our guide to branded content series.

5. Ask at the right moment, and only once or twice

YouTube's fake engagement policy is clear that "You're allowed to encourage viewers to subscribe". The best moment is just after you have delivered something useful, when the viewer has proof the promise is real. Then use YouTube's own tools to close the loop.

ToolThe ruleHow brands should use it
End screen subscribe elementVideo must be at least 25 seconds; end screens sit in the last 5 to 20 secondsPair it with one next video, not four competing elements
Video watermarkSquare image under 1 MB; can show for the last 15 seconds or the whole video; not clickable on mobileUse a simple logo; treat it as branding first

6. Use Shorts for discovery, with a path to long form

Shorts can introduce your channel to people who would never click a long video, but a Short with no next step rarely builds a lasting audience. Link each Short to a related long video, keep the same faces and format so viewers recognise the series, and check the Subscribers by content type report to see whether Shorts are actually converting. One vendor study of 18,000 channels by AIR Media Tech found mixing Shorts and long form helped in categories such as business and education but not in others, so test rather than assume. Our YouTube Shorts strategy report goes deeper.

7. Stay consistent and review monthly

Large datasets show a strong link between sustained publishing and subscriber growth. In vidIQ's study of 32.9 million channels under 1,000 subscribers, the share that crossed 1,000 within a year rose sharply with the number of videos they added.

Consistency does not mean flooding the feed. YouTube's notification help page says viewers get a maximum of three new video notifications from one channel in a day, and if you publish more than three videos in a short time "we may temporarily stop sending notifications for 24 hours". Pick a rhythm you can sustain, as we explain in how often to post on YouTube, and review the two subscriber reports every month.

What is a realistic subscriber number for a brand?

Most channels are small. In vidIQ's benchmark of 61.2 million channels, the median channel had 508 subscribers and only 1.3% had reached 100,000. Median monthly growth for channels between 1,000 and 9,999 subscribers was 13 subscribers a month. That is useful context for setting targets: a brand channel that grows steadily every month is already ahead of most of YouTube.

Frequently asked questions

Do subscribers matter on YouTube?

They matter as your most loyal viewers and an early signal on new uploads, but YouTube says recommendations rely primarily on each viewer's watch history. Subscribers do not guarantee views, so every video still has to earn its click.

Why am I losing YouTube subscribers?

Some loss is normal as people unsubscribe. YouTube also removes closed accounts and subscribers identified as spam, including those bought from third party services, from your count. Public counts are abbreviated, so small changes can look like jumps. See YouTube Help on subscriber counts.

Should I buy YouTube subscribers?

No. Purchased subscribers are removed from your count, and YouTube's fake engagement policy bans anything that artificially increases metrics, including sub4sub. Violations can lead to content removal, strikes and, in severe cases, channel termination, even if an agency did it for you.

How long does it take to get more subscribers on YouTube?

There is no fixed timeline. In vidIQ's data, 30.8% of small channels that added 52 or more videos in a year reached 1,000 subscribers within that year. A clear series published consistently usually beats sporadic high budget videos.

How do you get more subscribers on YouTube Shorts?

Make Shorts part of a recognisable series, link them to related long videos and check the Subscribers by content type report to see if they convert. Shorts are best used for discovery, with long form doing the deeper work of building loyalty.
