YouTube Channel Optimisation: A 7 Step Guide for Brand Channels (2026)

How to turn your channel page into a shop window that converts visitors into subscribers: name, description, trailer, Home sections, playlists, links and Posts, with a checklist.

YouTube channel optimisation is the work of turning your channel page into a shop window: a clear name, a description that says why to subscribe, a trailer for newcomers, and a Home tab that guides people to the right videos. Most brand channels skip it. They upload, share the link and leave the page on its default layout. This guide covers the seven settings that matter, the rules YouTube publishes for each one, and a checklist you can run every month.

If you are still setting up, start with our guide on how to start a YouTube channel for business, which covers Brand Accounts, permissions and banner sizes. This post picks up once the channel exists.

The short version

  • Your channel page is a landing page. It is where a curious viewer decides whether to subscribe, so treat it like one.
  • Use the trailer and the featured video differently. YouTube shows the trailer to people who have not subscribed and the featured video to returning subscribers, and each is shown once.
  • Organise the Home tab by viewer need. You get up to 12 sections. Six to eight, in a deliberate order, beats twelve random shelves.
  • Put your most important link first. Only the first of up to 14 links sits beside the Subscribe button.
  • Design for the TV screen. YouTube says TV is now its primary viewing device in the US, and Ofcom shows UK viewing on TV sets has doubled since 2022.

What is YouTube channel optimisation?

It is the set of choices that shape what a visitor sees on your channel: identity (name, handle, picture, banner), the words in your description, the trailer and featured video, the layout of the Home tab, your playlists, your links and your Posts. It is different from YouTube SEO, which is about individual videos ranking in search and recommendations.

The channel page is its own traffic source. In YouTube Analytics, YouTube defines Channel pages as "traffic from your YouTube channel or other YouTube channels". Most views will still come from browse features and suggested videos, but the people who land on your channel page are your warmest visitors. They have already watched something and want to know more.

Step 1: Fix the first impression

Name, handle, profile picture and banner are the parts people see before anything else. YouTube's own creator guide describes the banner as space that "can include graphics, short text, or even your upload schedule". For brands, an upload schedule is the most useful thing to put there, because it tells a visitor what subscribing gets them.

ElementYouTube ruleWhat brands should do
Channel nameCan be changed twice in any 14 day period; changing it removes a verification badgeUse the brand name people search for. Settle it before you apply for verification.
Handle3 to 30 characters; one handle per channel; also limited to two changes in 14 daysMatch your social handles so @mentions and search line up.
Profile pictureRenders at 98 x 98 pixels; no animated GIFsA simple logo mark that still reads at thumbnail size.
DescriptionUp to 1,000 characters (YouTube Data API); shown in the channel headerLead with who the channel is for and what they get, then your schedule.
LinksUp to 14; the first sits next to the Subscribe buttonPut the one link that matters most first.
Channel keywordsStill a field in advanced settingsFill it in, but YouTube does not say it helps discovery. Do not rely on it.

Rules from YouTube Help and the YouTube Data API reference, checked 21 October 2026. Recommendations are Advertain guidance.

One trap: YouTube says changing your channel name removes your verification badge (YouTube Help). Agree the final name with legal and brand teams before you change it.

Step 2: Write a description that answers why subscribe

The description now sits in the channel header, so it is part of the first screen. The YouTube Data API allows up to 1,000 characters, but visitors read the opening line. YouTube's advice is simple: "Enter a description to tell viewers what your channel is about and what they can expect."

What should a YouTube channel description include?

  1. Who the channel is for, in their words.
  2. What they will get: the series, formats and topics.
  3. When new videos land.
  4. One proof point, such as an award, a partner or a community size, only if it is true and current.
  5. Where to go next: your site or contact email.

Use the phrases your audience searches for, the same way you would on a web page, but write for people first. The separate channel keywords field still exists in advanced settings, though YouTube does not say it affects discovery.

These are two different slots. YouTube Help says the trailer is for people who have not subscribed, and that "once a viewer has watched your channel trailer, it won't be shown to them again". The featured video is for returning subscribers, can be any video on YouTube, and is also shown only once to each viewer.

So the trailer should be a short promise: who you are, what the channel offers, and why it is worth subscribing. Keep it under 90 seconds and get to the point in the first few seconds; our guide to YouTube hooks has opening lines that work. The featured video should change often. Use it for your newest flagship episode or a campaign launch.

Step 4: Build the Home tab like a shop window

This is the biggest lever. YouTube Help puts it plainly:

"You can customise the layout of your channel Home tab with up to 12 custom sections." YouTube Help

Section types include For you, Videos (which covers videos, Shorts and live streams), Playlists, Memberships, Channels, Top Community clips, Effects and Posts. A new layout starts with four default sections, which is why so many brand channels look identical. The For you section, launched in November 2023 according to 9to5Google, shows each visitor recommendations from your library based on what they watch, so it earns a high slot.

How do you customise a YouTube channel home page?

In YouTube Studio, go to Customisation, then Layout, add sections, and drag them into order. Here is a running order we use as a starting point for brand channels:

OrderSectionJob it does
1Trailer or featured videoA 30 to 90 second promise for new visitors; your latest flagship for subscribers
2For youPersonalised picks from your library for each visitor
3Latest videosProof the channel is alive
4Flagship series playlistThe show you want to be known for
5Start here playlistYour five best videos for first time viewers
6ShortsA fast sampler for mobile visitors
7Customer problem playlistTutorials or how tos grouped by the question people ask
8Posts or featured channelsCommunity, behind the scenes, partner channels

Advertain guidance. YouTube allows up to 12 custom sections; most brands need 6 to 8.

Step 5: Organise playlists and series

Shelves are only as good as the playlists behind them. Group videos by the question a viewer has, not by upload date or campaign code. For true episodic content, a series playlist tells YouTube that the videos belong together. YouTube Help says "a video cannot appear in more than one series playlist" and that series playlists need a verified account.

We cover series planning in depth in our guide to branded content series, and how to move viewers from one video to the next in our post on YouTube end screens.

YouTube lets you "showcase up to 14 links" on your channel, and the first one is displayed in the profile section near the Subscribe button. Everything else sits behind a "more links" prompt. Choose the first link based on the job of the channel: a product page, a newsletter sign up or a booking page. Add a contact email under Contact info so partners and press can reach you.

Step 7: Keep the Posts tab alive

YouTube renamed the Community tab to Posts in February 2025 (Social Media Today). Posts can be text, up to 10 images, polls, quizzes, videos or playlists, and they can be scheduled; YouTube limits how many you can publish in 24 hours (YouTube Help). At Made on YouTube in September 2026, YouTube said Posts are coming to TV "in the coming months".

A Posts section on the Home tab shows a visitor that the channel has a pulse between uploads. One poll or behind the scenes image a week is enough for most brands.

Why does YouTube channel optimisation matter more on TV?

On a phone, many people never see your channel page. On a TV, browsing a channel is a natural next step after an episode ends. In February 2025 YouTube's CEO wrote that "TV has surpassed mobile and is now the primary device for YouTube viewing in the U.S. (by watch time)", and in September 2026 YouTube said over half of its top 100 creators now have TV as their most watched interface (YouTube Blog). Nielsen measured YouTube at a record 14.2% of all US TV viewing in July 2026.

YouTube redesigned channel pages on its TV app in 2024 with what a spokesperson called a "new immersive layout", including a larger Subscribe button and 16:9 banner art (MediaPost). Check your banner and Home tab on a TV, not only on a laptop.

Examples: brand channels that use their Home tab well

We looked at these channels logged out, the view a new visitor gets, on 21 October 2026.

  • GoPro uses all 12 Home sections, including launch videos, a Freeride World Tour series, tips, award selections and community picks. The trailer introduces its latest camera range.
  • Canva organises shelves by series and audience, with separate rows for its own shows and for teachers and teams, plus a Courses tab.
  • Shopify follows the customer journey: product announcements, then start your business, grow your business and enterprise, with a trailer that tells the company story.

The pattern is the same: each shelf answers a different viewer need, and the order mirrors how a customer moves from curious to committed.

Frequently asked questions

Does channel optimisation help YouTube SEO?

Indirectly. YouTube ranks videos, not channel pages, and does not say the channel keywords field affects discovery. A well organised channel page does help visitors watch more and subscribe, and those signals feed recommendations over time.

How many sections can a YouTube channel home page have?

Up to 12 custom sections, according to YouTube Help. New layouts start with four default sections, which you can remove or reorder in YouTube Studio under Customisation.

How often can I change my YouTube channel name?

Twice in any 14 day period, and the same applies to your handle. Changing the name removes a verification badge.

Should a brand channel have a trailer?

Yes. It is shown only to people who have not subscribed, and only until they have watched it once, so it is your one chance to pitch the channel to a new visitor.
