Reels are where Instagram finds new audiences for brands. A good Instagram Reels strategy in 2026 comes down to three things: give Reels a clear job, make videos people watch to the end and send to friends, and test ideas cheaply before you scale them. Below are seven steps, the specs and length that work, and a weekly template.
If you are still choosing where to put short form effort, start with our comparison of TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts.
The short version
- Reels are a reach tool. Mosseri says most of what people see in Reels comes from accounts they do not follow.
- Watch time, likes and sends rank Reels. Sends matter slightly more for reaching people who do not follow you.
- 45 to 60 seconds is the sweet spot. In a 6 million Reel study, views and engagement peaked there and halved past 3 minutes.
- Test before you scale. Trial reels go to non followers first, so a weak idea never reaches your followers' feeds.
- Business accounts need cleared music. Use original audio or the Meta Sound Collection, and never licensed tracks in ads.
Why Reels still matter for brands in 2026
Instagram is now video first. Meta says more than 60% of the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram is with video (Meta, October 2026), and Mark Zuckerberg told investors in October 2025 that Instagram had reached 3 billion monthly actives, with video time up more than 30% in a year and Reels at an annual revenue run rate of over $50 billion (Meta Q3 2025 call).
In the UK, Ofcom found Instagram reaches 78% of online adults each month, or 38.5 million people, who spend about 20 minutes a day on it (Ofcom Online Nation 2025).

How does the Instagram Reels algorithm work?
Instagram has been unusually open about this. In its official ranking explainer, Adam Mosseri wrote that the most important predictions for Reels are "how likely you are to reshare a reel, watch a reel all the way through, like it, and go to the audio page", and that "the majority of what you see is from accounts you don't follow" (Instagram, Ranking explained).
In January 2025 he simplified it further for creators (Social Media Today):
"The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends." Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram
Likes count slightly more with followers, sends slightly more with non followers, so for a growing brand the share button matters most. Originality also matters: our guide to repurposing long form video covers Instagram's rules on reposted and watermarked clips, so we will not repeat them here.
The 7 step Instagram Reels strategy for brands
Step 1: Give Reels one clear job
Reels and carousels do different jobs. Buffer's analysis of more than 4 million posts found Reels reach 36% more people than carousels and 125% more than single photos, while carousels earn 12% more engagement than Reels (Buffer). Socialinsider's 2025 benchmarks show the same split.

So use Reels to reach new people and carousels to deepen the relationship. Write the job down ("reach UK runners aged 25 to 40 who do not follow us yet") and judge every idea against it.
Step 2: Build two or three repeatable series
Brands that last on Reels run series, not one off posts. Three that work for most categories:
- The useful one: a tip, a myth busted or a 45 second how to. These earn sends.
- The people one: the founder, a maker, a customer or the team. These earn likes from followers.
- The cultural one: your take on a trend, moment or format in your category, done quickly.
O2's "Daisy vs Scammers" work with VCCP is a strong UK example of a single character that can carry many episodes. The agency's award entry reports 900,000 likes and over 4 million organic views on Instagram (The Drum awards case study; figures are self reported).

Step 3: Get the specs and length right
| Setting | What to use | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 vertical, full screen | Meta Ads Guide |
| Organic length | Up to 3 minutes, and Reels up to 3 minutes can now be recommended | Adam Mosseri, Jan and Mar 2025 |
| Ad length | 0 seconds to 15 minutes (shorter is usually better) | Meta Ads Guide |
| Ad resolution | 1440 x 2560 pixels, MP4 or MOV, up to 4GB | Meta Ads Guide |
| Safe zone | Keep the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% each side free of text and logos | Meta Ads Guide |
| Sound | Design for sound on: over 75% of Reels views are sound on | Meta for Developers, Nov 2024 |
| Music in ads | Original audio or the Meta Sound Collection, not licensed tracks | Meta Ads Guide |
Organic resolution and cover sizes are set out on Instagram's own help page; check it before a big launch as specs change.
What is the best length for Instagram Reels in 2026?
Reels can run to 3 minutes, and since early 2025 Instagram recommends Reels of that length (Social Media Today). But longer is not better. Socialinsider analysed 6 million brand Reels from the first half of 2026: Reels of 45 to 60 seconds had the highest median views and the highest engagement rate, and Reels over 3 minutes got roughly half the views.

Our rule: make the Reel as long as the idea deserves and not a second more. Most product tips land in 30 to 60 seconds. Use the full 3 minutes only for stories that hold attention, and cut longer ideas into a series instead.
Step 4: Win the first three seconds and design for sends
Instagram now shows a retention chart for each Reel and a skip rate, the share of views where people swiped away in the first 3 seconds. Instagram's guidance is that "the flatter the line, the more engaged your audience is" (Social Media Today). Open on the payoff or the most surprising frame, put words on screen in the first second, and cut anything that delays the point. Our guide to hooks has 25 opening line templates that transfer well to Reels.
Then ask: would someone send this to a friend? A product shot with a logo rarely gets sent.
Step 5: Test ideas with trial reels
Trial reels, launched in December 2024, show a Reel to non followers first. Your followers do not see it in Feed or the Reels tab, results arrive after about 24 hours, and you can share it with everyone manually or let Instagram do it automatically if it performs well in the first 72 hours (Instagram Creators). They are open to public professional accounts with at least 1,000 followers and can now be scheduled (Social Media Today).
Use them to test two or three hooks on the same idea each week, changing only the opening so you learn what moved the number.
Step 6: Clear music and bring in creators
Music on Instagram is licensed for personal use, and a Business or Creator account is a strong sign the use is commercial, as law firm Osborne Clarke notes (Osborne Clarke). Meta tells advertisers not to use licensed music in Reels ads and to use "original audio or royalty free music available in our Meta Sound Collection instead" (Meta Ads Guide). Original audio has a bonus: when others reuse it, viewers land on your audio page.
Creators are the fastest way to reach audiences you do not already have. Partnership ads let you run a creator's post as an ad from both accounts, and Meta has reported an average 19% reduction in cost per acquisition (eMarketer). Agree usage rights and paid amplification up front; our influencer contract template covers the clauses.
Step 7: Measure the signals Instagram ranks on
Mosseri's advice is to "pay close attention to average watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach". Track those three plus skip rate in a simple weekly sheet, label each Reel by series and hook type; after four weeks you will know which series to grow. A Reel with fewer views but double the sends per reach is usually the better idea to scale.
Should brands put paid budget behind Reels?
Yes, once an organic Reel has proved it holds attention. Meta's meta analysis of 63 brand lift studies found campaigns using Reels ads delivered 14% higher average brand lift than business as usual (Meta for Developers). Spend behind organic winners.

A weekly Reels template (and checklist)
| Day | Reel | Job it does | Signal to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Trial reel: new hook on a proven idea | Test with non followers | Skip rate, views |
| Tuesday | Series A: the useful one (how to, tip, myth) | Earn sends | Sends per reach |
| Wednesday | Carousel or Story on the same theme | Saves and depth | Saves |
| Thursday | Series B: the people one (team, founder, customer) | Build connection with followers | Likes per reach |
| Friday | Creator or partnership Reel | Borrowed trust and new audiences | Reach from non followers |
| Weekend | Best performer of the week boosted or cut down | Scale what works | Cost per result |
Advertain guidance, not platform rules. Three Reels a week is a sensible floor for most brands; add volume only when quality holds.
Before any Reel goes live, check:
- It does one job and fits a named series.
- The first 3 seconds show the payoff, with text on screen.
- It is shot 9:16, sound on, with key text inside the safe zone.
- It is 45 to 90 seconds unless the story earns more.
- Audio is original or from the Meta Sound Collection.
- Paid partnerships carry the paid partnership label and an "Ad" disclosure.
- You know which signal (sends, likes or saves) will judge it.
This is the same discipline we use across short form for brands such as Formula E, whose content has passed 7 million views across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. See more in our TikTok playbook and on our work page.
Frequently asked questions
How long should Instagram Reels be for brands?
Up to 3 minutes, but the best recent data puts the sweet spot at 45 to 60 seconds. Go longer only when the story holds attention.
Can business accounts use trending music on Reels?
Music on Instagram is licensed for personal use, so brands should use original audio or the royalty free Meta Sound Collection. Meta tells advertisers not to use licensed music in Reels ads.
What are trial reels on Instagram?
Trial reels are shown to non followers first so you can test an idea without it appearing to your followers. After about 24 hours you see results and can share it with everyone, or let Instagram share it automatically if it performs well within 72 hours.
Do Instagram Reels reach non followers?
Yes. Instagram says most of what people see in Reels comes from accounts they do not follow.
How often should a brand post Reels?
Brands in Socialinsider's 2025 benchmark raised Reels output from 6 to 8 a month. We suggest three a week as a floor, using trial reels for extra tests, and only adding volume when quality holds. Need a hand? Talk to Advertain.
