TikTok Marketing Strategy for Brands: A 7 Step Playbook for 2026

A step by step TikTok marketing strategy for brands: who is on TikTok in the UK, what the platform says works, how to mix organic, creators and paid, plus a weekly template.

A good TikTok marketing strategy in 2026 comes down to one decision and one habit. The decision: give TikTok a single job, whether that is awareness, search, shopping or leads. The habit: publish native, creator style video on a rhythm you can sustain, then put paid spend behind the posts that are already working. Everything else in this guide supports those two things.

Below is the seven step playbook we use with brands, the UK audience data behind it, the rules most brands get wrong (music and disclosure), three examples and a weekly template you can copy.

The short version

  • Give TikTok one job. Awareness, search, shopping and leads need different content and different measures.
  • Use a Business Account and the Commercial Music Library. TikTok says businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial use.
  • Hook fast. TikTok advises putting the hook in the first 6 seconds and the proposition in the first 3.
  • Post on a rhythm, not a whim. The median brand posts about two TikToks a week; consistency beats volume.
  • Pay to amplify winners. Spark Ads let you boost organic and creator posts that have already proved themselves.

Is TikTok good for marketing in 2026?

For most consumer brands, yes. Ofcom found TikTok reached 56% of UK online adults in May 2025, with 18 to 34 year olds spending 49 minutes a day on it (Ofcom Online Nation 2025). Ofcom also reports TikTok is the most popular main app for 16 to 24 year olds, named by 35% (Ofcom Adults' Media Use and Attitudes 2025). TikTok's own ad tools put UK adult ad reach at 26.8 million in late 2025, up 2.96 million in a year (DataReportal), with an ad audience that skews 61.5% female.

Source: DataReportal, Digital 2024 United Kingdom and Digital 2026 United Kingdom, based on TikTok's own advertising tools. The end 2024 figure is derived from DataReportal's reported growth of 2.96 million in the year to late 2025. Ad reach is not the same as unique users.

Two cautions. First, the audience is still young and female leaning, so if your buyers are 55+ men, TikTok may be a supporting channel rather than the lead. Second, regulation is tightening: the ICO's £12.7m fine over children's data became final in September 2026 (ICO) and Ofcom opened an Online Safety Act investigation into TikTok in July 2026 (Ofcom). Neither stops brands advertising, but both are worth a line in your brand safety plan.

Your TikTok marketing strategy in seven steps

Step 1. Give TikTok one job

Write one sentence: "TikTok exists to ___ for ___." Awareness means measuring reach, watch time and brand search. Search means owning the questions people type in the app. Shopping means TikTok Shop sales and affiliate creators. Leads means lead forms and DMs. Brands that try to do all four from day one usually do none of them well.

Step 2. Set up a Business Account properly

A Business Account gives you Business Suite, which TikTok describes as "a central location for all features and functions" for business profiles, covering analytics, scheduling and lead tools (TikTok Ads Help). It also changes your music. TikTok's Commercial Music Library holds about 1 million pre cleared songs, and TikTok states plainly that "businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial usage" (TikTok Ads Help, Commercial Music Library). That covers organic posts, duets, stitches, ads and branded content.

Step 3. Choose three content pillars and one series

Pick three pillars your audience actually cares about, for example a product in use, behind the scenes and answers to customer questions. Then turn one pillar into a named series with a repeatable format. Series reduce the creative load each week and give viewers a reason to follow. If you already make long form video, our guide to repurposing long form video shows how to cut it for TikTok without falling foul of originality rules.

Step 4. Build every video to TikTok's creative rules

TikTok's own guidance is unusually specific (TikTok creative best practices):

  • Shoot vertically at 9:16 and at least 720p, with sound or music.
  • "Prioritize your hook in the first 6 seconds" and "introduce your content proposition in the first 3 seconds".
  • Use captions or text overlays, around 5 to 10 words per second.
  • Keep key content inside the UI safe zone.
  • Use "a DIY or not overly polished style" so it sits naturally in the feed.

TikTok also reports that over 63% of the highest click through rate videos show the key message or product within the first 3 seconds (TikTok creative tips; vendor data, undated). For opening line ideas, see our 25 hook templates, which translate directly to TikTok.

Step 5. Post on a rhythm you can sustain

TikTok does not give brands a target number. Its small business guide says "you don't need to post daily, but creating a content schedule and sticking to it will help you build momentum" (TikTok for Business). For context, Rival IQ found the median brand posts about two TikToks a week, and TikTok again topped every platform for engagement.

Step 6. Bring in creators, then amplify with Spark Ads

Creators already speak the platform's language. TikTok One is TikTok's hub for finding vetted creators and agencies (TikTok One). When a creator post or your own post performs, Spark Ads let you run it as "a native ad format" using the original organic post, with all engagement attributed back to it (Spark Ads). The creator generates a post code from the video's ad settings and you can authorise up to 20 codes at a time (Spark Ads creation guide).

Every promotional post needs the "Disclose commercial content" setting switched on, which adds a "Paid partnership" or "Commercial content" label (TikTok Ads Help). In the UK, the ASA also expects a clear, upfront label such as "Ad", and warns against vague terms like "spon" or "gifted" (ASA). Our influencer brief template and UK influencer rates guide cover briefing and budgets.

Step 7. Plan for search and shopping

TikTok says 57% of its users use search and 23% search within 30 seconds of opening the app (TikTok internal data, US users, June 2024), and that adding Search Ads to In Feed campaigns lifted conversions by 20% on average (TikTok for Business). Treat that as vendor data, but the lesson holds: title and caption your videos with the words customers type.

On shopping, TikTok reports UK TikTok Shop sales grew 50% over Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2025 versus 2024 (TikTok Newsroom) and that UK LIVE shopping grew 55% year on year (TikTok Newsroom). These are self reported figures. And on 5 October 2026 at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced more AI tools, including a conversational Shopping Assistant, Buy Direct checkout, AI automated search campaigns in Smart+ and Smart+ Creative Selection (Social Media Today). No UK launch dates were given, so plan around what is live in your account today.

TikTok marketing campaign examples

Duolingo. Grew from 50,000 to more than 16 million TikTok followers in just over four years with a small team, a mascot led personality and fast turnaround; its "dead Duo" stunt went from idea to execution in six days (The Drum, February 2025).

Ryanair. Built a social team of eight split into "always on" and "react and community" roles, with a "low cost, high reach" approach that took weekly impressions from 5 to 10 million to more than 20 million within a year (Marketing Beat, January 2023).

M&S. Paired creator led content with Smart+ and catalogue ads; TikTok's case study reports a 44% higher conversion rate and 94% lower cost per acquisition (TikTok for Business; vendor case study).

The pattern across all three: a recognisable voice, speed and a willingness to look like TikTok rather than like a TV ad. It is the same principle behind our Formula E work, which drew 7M+ views across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok (see our work).

Frequently asked questions

What is the main strategy for brands on TikTok?

Make content that looks native to the feed, hook viewers in the first few seconds, post consistently around a few clear pillars, and use creators and Spark Ads to scale what already works. For how TikTok compares with Reels and Shorts, see our platform comparison.

Should a brand use a TikTok business or personal account?

A Business Account. It unlocks Business Suite analytics, scheduling and lead tools, and keeps you on the Commercial Music Library, which is the music TikTok clears for commercial use.

Can TikTok business accounts use music?

Yes, from the Commercial Music Library of about 1 million pre cleared tracks. TikTok says businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial use, including in organic posts.

How often should a brand post on TikTok?

TikTok sets no number. The median brand posts about two a week (Rival IQ, 2026). Start with two or three quality posts a week you can sustain, then add more only if quality holds.
