Social Media KPIs: Which Ones Matter and How to Set Them (2026 Guide)

The social media KPIs that connect to business results, how to calculate each one, how the platforms now count them, plus a free template and checklist.

Most brands do not have a measurement problem. They have a choosing problem. Every platform hands you dozens of numbers, and the easy ones (likes, followers, impressions) end up in the monthly report because they are there. This guide sets out the social media KPIs that actually connect to business results, how each one is calculated, how the platforms now count them, and a simple way to set targets your finance team will respect.

The short answer: choose one or two social media KPIs per business goal, measure rates against reach or views rather than followers, and always pair a platform metric with at least one outcome measured outside the platform.

  • Metrics are not KPIs. A KPI is the small set of metrics you have agreed will tell you whether a business goal is being met.
  • Engagement is a weak proxy. Recent research found engagement rate had no significant relationship with brand memory, while creative quality explained over half of it.
  • The definitions moved. Meta now uses Views as its main metric and YouTube changed how Shorts views are counted, so year on year comparisons need care.
  • Benchmarks depend on the maths. The same Instagram content can show 2.7% engagement per view and 0.3% per follower.
  • Six to eight KPIs is enough. Each needs a baseline, a target, an owner and a review date.

What are social media KPIs?

Social media KPIs (key performance indicators) are the few measures a brand agrees to judge its social activity by, each tied to a business goal such as awareness, consideration, sales or customer service. A metric is anything you can count. A KPI is a metric you have chosen, given a target and put an owner against.

That distinction matters because the pressure to prove value is rising. In HubSpot’s 2026 social media report, only 37% of marketers said it was easy to tie social activity to business outcomes, and 69% of social teams said they faced increasing pressure to prove ROI (HubSpot). Sprout Social’s 2025 Index found 65% of respondents want to see direct connections between social campaigns and business goals (Sprout Social). If your KPIs stop at likes, you cannot have that conversation. For the money side, see our guide to how to calculate social media ROI.

The social media KPIs that matter, by goal

Start from the goal in your social media strategy, then pick the KPI that best shows progress towards it. The table below is the menu we work from. You will not need all of it.

Which social media KPIs should brands track?

For most brands we would put five on the main dashboard: reach, average watch time, shares per reach, social sessions to site and one conversion or brand outcome. Add response time if social is a customer service channel. Sprout reports that about three quarters of consumers expect a response within 24 hours or sooner (Sprout Social), so slow replies are a real cost, not a vanity issue.

Why engagement rate is not a business KPI

Engagement rate is useful for comparing posts with each other. It is a poor stand in for brand or sales results, and the evidence keeps saying so.

What explained brand memory lift in 1,217 paid TikTok creator ads

Share of brand memory lift explained by each factor. Creative quality means emotional response plus early branding. Source: WPP Media, System1 and TikTok, The Creator Effectiveness Playbook, reported by Net Influencer, 26 June 2026. Eight markets including the UK. TikTok coauthored the study.

In a 2026 study of 1,217 paid TikTok creator ads across eight markets, run by WPP Media, System1 and TikTok, engagement rate showed “no significant relationship with Brand Memory Lift”. The comment to like ratio explained 11.3%. Creative quality, meaning emotional response plus early branding, explained 54.6% (Net Influencer). Kantar’s analysis of more than 15,000 branded creator assets reached a similar conclusion (MARKETECH APAC).

“Our research is a wake up call that high engagement and genuine brand effectiveness more often than not do not align.” Vera Sidlova, Global Creative Director, Kantar

Older academic work points the same way. A study of 1,066 loyalty members at a US restaurant chain, published in the Journal of Interactive Marketing, found that liking a Facebook post had no significant impact on visit frequency, while positive and negative comments had the strongest predictive power (Georgia Tech Scheller). The lesson is not to ignore engagement. It is to read the quality of it (comments, shares, saves) and to prove impact with a separate brand or sales measure such as a brand lift study or share of search.

How the platforms count: the definitions changed

If your KPI history goes back more than two years, some of it is measured differently now. Meta made Views the single distribution metric across Facebook and Instagram, defined as “the number of times a reel or video was played” or the number of times photo or text posts were on screen, and renamed watch time to Minutes Viewed (Social Media Today). In August 2025 it said impressions would be replaced by views on all API versions (Social Media Today). Because repeat views count, Views can run higher than the old impressions figure.

PlatformHeadline metric nowHow the platform defines it
Instagram and FacebookViewsThe number of times a reel or video was played, or a photo or text post was on screen. Repeat views count. Impressions are deprecated for Instagram media created after 2 July 2024.
YouTubeViews, impressions and impressions CTRImpressions are thumbnails shown on YouTube. Half of channels and videos sit between 2% and 10% impressions CTR. Shorts views count from the start of play since 31 March 2025; the old measure is now engaged views.
TikTokVideo views and average play timeA view is counted when a video starts to play; 2 second, 6 second and 100% views are reported separately (ads metrics).
LinkedInImpressions and engagementLinkedIn defines engagement as organic clicks, likes, comments and shares over impressions. Follows are not included.

YouTube made its own change: since 31 March 2025, Shorts views count when a Short starts to play, and the old measure lives on as engaged views (PPC Land). Note any break in your reports so nobody mistakes a counting change for growth. Our YouTube analytics guide covers the Studio reports in depth.

What are good social media KPIs? Benchmarks with care

Benchmarks are only comparable when the formula matches. Dash Social’s report for the first half of 2025, which mostly divides engagement by impressions or views, gives the averages below (Dash Social).

Average engagement rate by platform, first half of 2025

Engagement mostly divided by impressions or views, not followers, so these figures are not comparable with follower based rates. Period 1 January to 30 June 2025. Source: Dash Social Social Media Benchmark Report, Issue 2 2025 (vendor data; samples published for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube only).

The same report shows Instagram engagement at 2.7% per view but 0.3% per follower. Hootsuite’s 2026 figures, which appear to use followers, put Instagram at 4.2% and TikTok at 1.5% for each platform’s best performing format (Hootsuite). The numbers disagree because the denominators do. Hootsuite gives both formulas: engagements divided by reach, times 100, or engagements divided by followers, times 100. We recommend reach, because followers no longer decide who sees most content.

Platform averages also drift. Metricool’s study of more than 670,000 LinkedIn posts found Company Page impressions down 10% year on year while clicks per post rose 5% (Net Influencer). Your own last 90 days is a better baseline than any industry average.

How to set social media KPIs in 7 steps

  1. Write down the business goal. For example, grow online sales from new customers by 15% this year.
  2. Name the job social does for that goal. Usually awareness among new buyers and traffic to product pages.
  3. Pick one or two KPIs per job. Reach among new audiences and social sessions to site, for example.
  4. Fix the formula. Write the denominator down (reach or views) and the date range, so the number means the same thing every month.
  5. Take a 90 day baseline. Export native analytics and Google Analytics 4 data, tagged with UTM parameters.
  6. Set a target and an owner. A stretch of 10% to 25% over baseline is a sensible start, then adjust (Advertain guidance).
  7. Review on a rhythm. Weekly for care, monthly for most KPIs, quarterly for brand and sales outcomes. Link reviews to your content calendar so lessons change the plan.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most important social media KPIs?

For most brands: reach, average watch time, shares per reach, social sessions to site and one conversion or brand outcome. Add response time if customers contact you on social.

How do you measure social media KPIs?

Use native analytics for reach, views and watch time, UTM tagged links and Google Analytics 4 for traffic and conversions, and a social listening tool for share of voice. Fix each formula and review on a set rhythm.

What are the KPIs for social media brand awareness?

Reach, views and minutes viewed, share of voice and audience growth among new viewers. To prove awareness actually moved, add a brand lift study or track share of search over time.

How many social media KPIs should you track?

Six to eight on the main dashboard is plenty. Track more metrics in the background if you like, but only KPIs with a target and an owner belong in the report.
