How to Calculate Social Media ROI: Formula, Examples and Template (2026)

The social media ROI formula, a seven step method to track it properly, a worked example with real costs, and a template your team can fill in this month.

Here is the short answer to how to calculate social media ROI: take the value social media generated, subtract everything it cost, divide by that cost and multiply by 100. The formula is the easy part. The hard part is counting the full cost, putting a fair value on what social produced and being honest about what would have happened anyway. This guide gives you the formula, a seven step method, a worked example and a template you can use this month.

It matters more every year. UK brands spent £11.52bn on social media advertising in 2025, up 21% on 2024 and almost a quarter of all UK ad spend, according to the AA/WARC figures reported by Marketing Week. Finance teams now want to know what that money returns.

The short version

  • The formula: social media ROI = (value attributed to social minus total cost) ÷ total cost × 100.
  • Count every cost. Ad spend, creators, production, tools and people. Most teams forget the last two.
  • Use profit, not revenue, when you can. In our worked example the same month is 76% ROI on revenue and 5.5% on profit.
  • Track before you calculate. UTM tags, pixels and conversions APIs decide whether the numbers mean anything.
  • Then test for lift. Attribution tells you what was touched. Holdouts and marketing mix models tell you what was caused.

What is social media ROI?

Social media ROI (return on investment) measures the value your social activity creates compared with what it costs. It covers paid social, organic content, creator partnerships and community work, as long as you can put a cost and a value on them. It is different from ROAS (return on ad spend), which only divides revenue by media spend and ignores everything else you paid for.

Most teams still report the activity rather than the return. In Sprout Social’s 2025 survey of 1,200 marketing leaders, only 44% rated their social team “expert” at measuring business impact, and engagement was the most used success metric. Engagement is a useful signal. It is not a return.

The social media ROI formula

Social media ROI (%) = (value attributed to social minus total social cost) ÷ total social cost × 100

A result of 0% means you broke even. A result of 100% means every pound spent came back with another pound on top. A negative number means social cost more than it returned in the period you measured, which is common for brand building activity that pays back over months rather than weeks.

Two choices change the answer more than anything else: whether “value” means revenue or profit, and which attribution model decides what counts as social. Write both down every time you report a number.

How to calculate social media ROI in 7 steps

1. Pick one business objective and the value you will count

Choose the outcome social is meant to drive this quarter: online sales, qualified leads, app installs, store visits or brand search. Then decide how you will turn it into pounds. For ecommerce that is revenue or, better, gross profit. For lead generation it is lead value: close rate × average deal value × margin.

2. Add up the full cost

Include paid media, creator fees and usage rights, production, software and people. People are the line most ROI reports leave out. Payscale puts the median UK social media manager salary at about £29,000 in 2026, and the ONS median for all full time employees was £39,039 in April 2025. Convert salary into a loaded hourly rate and multiply by the hours spent. For guidance on creator costs see our UK influencer rates guide.

Cost lineWhat to includeExample (illustrative)
Paid mediaEverything spent on Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and other platforms in the period£6,000
CreatorsFees, usage rights and gifted product at cost£2,500
ProductionShoots, editing, motion graphics, music licences£1,500
ToolsScheduling, listening, analytics and design software for the period£300
PeopleHours spent multiplied by a loaded hourly rate40 hours × £20 = £800
Total cost£11,100

Google Analytics reads five core campaign parameters from your URLs: utm_source (the referrer), utm_medium (the marketing medium), utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content, which Google says is used “to differentiate creatives”. There is also utm_id for a campaign ID. Agree a naming convention once, for example source = instagram, medium = paid_social or organic_social, and never improvise.

4. Install pixels and conversions APIs

Browser tracking alone misses conversions. Each major platform now pairs a pixel with a server side connection: Meta’s Conversions API, LinkedIn’s Insight Tag plus its Conversions API, and TikTok’s Pixel alongside its Events API, which TikTok describes as “a secure server to server interface” and recommends running with the Pixel and deduplication.

5. Choose and record your attribution model

Google Analytics 4 now offers three attribution models: data driven, paid and organic last click, and Google paid channels last click. First click, linear, time decay and position based models were removed in November 2023. Google Ads lists data driven as the default for most conversion actions, and GA4’s default lookback window is 30 days for acquisition key events and 90 days for the rest. Social often starts journeys that another channel finishes, so last click usually undercounts it. Note which model you used next to every ROI figure.

6. Put a value on what is not a sale

Not every objective ends in a checkout. For leads, use the value per lead formula from step one. For awareness, do not invent a pound value for impressions or engagement. Report the brand outcome instead (reach in the target audience, brand search, lift study results) alongside the cost, and keep it out of the ROI percentage. Our guide to measuring brand awareness covers the options.

7. Calculate, then test what social really caused

Run the formula, then check the result against incrementality. The simplest test is a holdout: switch social off in one region or for one audience and compare. Larger budgets can use marketing mix modelling. Google made its open source model Meridian available to all marketers in January 2025, and Meta maintains the open source Robyn package. In a TransUnion and EMARKETER survey, 67% of marketers said they now prioritise incremental ROI.

Worked example: a month of social for a coffee brand

A fictional UK coffee brand runs paid social, two creator partnerships and its own organic content for a month. Using the costs in the table above (£11,100 in total) and 610 orders attributed to social in GA4 at a £32 average order value, here is how the numbers come out.

MeasureCalculationResult
Attributed revenue610 orders × £32 average order value£19,520
ROI on revenue(£19,520 minus £11,100) ÷ £11,100 × 10076%
Gross profit (60% margin)£19,520 × 0.6£11,712
ROI on gross profit(£11,712 minus £11,100) ÷ £11,100 × 1005.5%
ROAS on ad spend only£19,520 ÷ £6,0003.25

Advertain worked example using a fictional brand. The same month looks very different depending on whether you count revenue or profit.

On revenue the month looks excellent. On profit it barely washes its face. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions. Report the profit version to finance, and use the revenue version only if everyone knows that is what it is.

“Short term effects are vital for efficiency. But long term effects drive growth and profit.” Les Binet and Peter Field, The Long and the Short of It, IPA

That is why a single month rarely tells the whole story. Binet and Field’s analysis of IPA Databank campaigns found the profit effects of emotional campaigns kept growing for three years. If your social plan includes brand building, measure it over a longer window too. Our report on paid vs organic social media looks at how payback differs by channel and timescale.

What is a good ROI for social media marketing?

There is no universal benchmark, because ROI depends on your margin, price point, sales cycle and attribution model. What we can say is where marketers believe social sits. In HubSpot’s 2026 channel research, B2C marketers put paid social content first for ROI (28.5% ranked it in their top three) and organic social joint second (23.9%). B2B marketers ranked paid social third (23.3%) behind their website and email. By format, short form video tops the list.

A practical rule: on profit, anything above 0% is paying for itself in the period; compare each campaign against your own previous months and against other channels measured the same way, not against someone else’s headline number. Video led creator content is often where we see the biggest swings, so measure it at campaign level. See our guide to creator marketing for how brands are structuring that spend.

Frequently asked questions

What is the social media ROI formula?

Social media ROI = (value attributed to social minus total social cost) ÷ total social cost × 100. Total cost should include media, creators, production, tools and staff time.

How do you track ROI on social media?

Tag every link with UTM parameters, install each platform’s pixel and conversions API, set up key events in Google Analytics 4, and record the attribution model you use. Then check the result with a holdout or lift test.

What is a good ROI for social media marketing?

There is no single benchmark. On a profit basis, anything above 0% has paid for itself in the period. Compare against your own history and other channels measured the same way.

Is engagement a measure of social media ROI?

No. Engagement is a useful early signal of whether content works, but ROI needs a cost and a value in pounds. Report engagement alongside ROI, not instead of it.

What is the difference between social media ROI and ROAS?

ROAS divides revenue by ad spend only. ROI subtracts every cost, including people, creators and production, and works best on profit rather than revenue.
