If you want to know how to rank on ChatGPT, start with an uncomfortable fact: there is no fixed position one. ChatGPT builds every answer fresh, and the same question asked twice can name different brands. What you can do is make your brand the source ChatGPT is most likely to find, trust and cite. That means being crawlable by OpenAI's search bot, publishing the official facts about your business on your own site, ranking in the classic search engines ChatGPT leans on, and earning mentions on the third party sites it reads.
This guide is part of our series on AI search. If you are new to the topic, start with our generative engine optimisation guide, which explains how AI answers are assembled. Here we focus on one job: getting your brand cited and recommended inside ChatGPT, step by step.
The short version
- You cannot own a ranking. You can raise how often your brand appears across many prompts, which is the only measure that holds up.
- Let the right bot in. OAI SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search. Blocking the training bot is a separate choice.
- Be the official source. ChatGPT now leans on brands' own sites for factual answers, and far less on Reddit and Wikipedia than it did in March.
- Classic search still matters. ChatGPT uses third party search providers such as Bing, so pages that rank well are easier for it to find.
- Measure visibility, not position. Track a fixed set of prompts, run them repeatedly, and watch ChatGPT referrals in your analytics.

Can you actually rank on ChatGPT?
Not in the way you rank on Google. When SparkToro and Gumshoe asked volunteers to run the same brand recommendation prompts 60 to 100 times each across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, they found under a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice, and roughly a 1 in 1,000 chance of the same order (SparkToro and Gumshoe, January 2026; 2,961 responses). Their conclusion is useful: visibility measured across dozens or hundreds of prompts, each run several times, is a reasonable metric. A single "rank" is not.
“Any tool that gives a ‘ranking position in AI’ is full of baloney.” Rand Fishkin, SparkToro
So when people ask how to rank on ChatGPT, the honest answer is: increase the share of relevant answers that mention or cite you. ChatGPT now reaches a very large audience. OpenAI described a “collective 1.2B weekly users” across its products in its OpenAI DevDay 2026 recap on 29 September 2026, and ChatGPT sends the overwhelming majority of AI referral traffic. BrightEdge puts its share at 95.1% in August 2026 (BrightEdge, September 2026; vendor, method not disclosed).
How does ChatGPT decide which brands to cite?
OpenAI is fairly open about the mechanics. ChatGPT searches the web automatically when a question might benefit from it, and answers that search contain inline citations (OpenAI ChatGPT search help page). It may share disassociated queries with third party search providers such as Bing. Any public website can appear, but the crawler that matters is OAI SearchBot, which OpenAI says is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search (OpenAI crawler documentation). GPTBot is the training crawler, and the two settings are independent.
The sources ChatGPT prefers have also shifted sharply this year. Ahrefs tracked US ChatGPT citations from March to September 2026 and found Reddit's presence fell from about 1 in every 5 answers to about 1 in 43, and Wikipedia's from about 1 in 7 to about 1 in 35. On factual questions such as pricing, features and company details, 84.4% of answers cited at least one official source (Ahrefs, October 2026; vendor, 66.6 million responses).

Two other rules matter for brands. Product results in ChatGPT shopping are “selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads” (OpenAI shopping help page). And ChatGPT ads, which have run in the UK since the summer, are labelled as sponsored and shown after the answer. OpenAI says “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you” (OpenAI, Testing ads in ChatGPT). In other words, you cannot buy your way into the answer itself.
How to rank on ChatGPT in 7 steps
1. Let OAI SearchBot crawl your site
Check your robots.txt and your CDN or firewall settings. If OAI SearchBot is blocked, OpenAI says ChatGPT may still show your URL from a third party search provider, but only as a link and title, with no summary of your content (OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ). Copy the exact user agent names from OpenAI crawler documentation; changes take about 24 hours to apply. You can block GPTBot from training and still allow OAI SearchBot for search.
2. Publish the official facts on your own site
This is the biggest opportunity right now. In Ahrefs' study, 63.4% of citations on factual prompts and 46.4% on comparison prompts went to official websites (Ahrefs, October 2026). Give ChatGPT clean pages to cite: what you sell, who it is for, prices or price ranges, where you operate, how you compare with alternatives, and answers to the questions customers actually ask. Write them in plain text, not locked inside images or PDFs, and keep one clear page per topic.
3. Rank in classic search, including Bing
ChatGPT uses third party providers such as Bing, so classic SEO is still the foundation. The overlap is debated: an early Seer Interactive, February 2025 study found over 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results (about 500 citations), while a larger AI+Automation replication, April 2026 found far lower overlap at page level once ChatGPT's own follow up searches were included. Either way, pages that rank are easier to find. Google says there are no special optimisations needed for its own AI features and that SEO best practice still applies (Google Search Central). Our YouTube SEO guide covers the video side.
4. Earn mentions on trusted third party sites
ChatGPT reads what others say about you. SE Ranking's analysis of 129,000 domains found sites listed on review platforms were cited 4.6 to 6.3 times on average versus 1.8 for those that were not, and heavily linked domains were cited far more often (SE Ranking via Search Engine Journal, November 2025; vendor, correlational). Genuine reviews, press coverage, expert roundups and partner pages all help. Our guide to getting user generated content covers reviews and the UK rules on incentives. Do not chase thin “best of” lists: after the GPT 5.6 update, listicles' share of ChatGPT citations fell from 15.77% to 7.80% in Peec AI data (MarketMaze, reporting Peec AI data, September 2026).
5. Keep your key pages fresh
AI assistants cite newer content than classic search does. Ahrefs found the pages ChatGPT cites are 958 days old on average, against about 1,416 days for organic results (Ahrefs freshness study; vendor, about 17 million URLs). Review your most important pages every quarter, update facts and dates, and say when the page was last updated.

6. Get your products into ChatGPT shopping
If you sell products, ChatGPT ranks merchants on availability, price and quality (OpenAI shopping help page). Shopify merchants flow in through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for direct product feed access. In March 2026 OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout and moved its focus to product discovery through feeds (OpenAI, Powering product discovery in ChatGPT), so a complete, accurate feed matters more than a checkout integration.
7. Track visibility, not position
Build a fixed list of 30 to 100 prompts your customers would ask, run each several times a month, and record how often you are mentioned and cited against competitors. In analytics, ChatGPT referrals carry utm_source=chatgpt.com (OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ). Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 that shows citations across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, though not ChatGPT itself (Bing Webmaster Blog, February 2026). Semrush found 45% of marketing leaders cannot accurately measure AI visibility (Semrush AI Visibility Index, June 2026; vendor), so a simple, consistent method already puts you ahead. For a wider brand view, pair this with share of search.

Is it worth the effort?
AI referrals are still a small slice of most sites' traffic, but they tend to be high intent. Adobe Analytics data on US retail sites showed AI referred visits converting 60% higher than other traffic in July 2026, with 53% more revenue per visit (Adobe data via Digital Commerce 360, August 2026). And because ChatGPT names only a few brands per answer, being one of them is worth more than a tenth place blue link. Our AI in marketing report puts this shift in a wider budget context.

Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to appear in ChatGPT results?
Yes. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, as long as OAI SearchBot is not blocked (OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ). Appearing consistently depends on being a clear, trusted source on the topic.
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make your own site the clearest source of facts about your business, rank well in classic search, earn genuine reviews and mentions on trusted third party sites, and keep everything up to date. If you sell products, submit a product feed.
Can you pay to rank on ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT ads are shown after the answer and labelled as sponsored, and OpenAI says ads do not influence answers (OpenAI, Testing ads in ChatGPT). Shopping results are also not ads.
Does llms.txt help you rank on ChatGPT?
There is no evidence it does. SE Ranking found llms.txt showed negligible impact on ChatGPT citations (SE Ranking via Search Engine Journal, November 2025). Your time is better spent on crawl access, content and mentions.
Where to go from here
Ranking on ChatGPT is not a trick; it is the same discipline as good search and good PR, aimed at a new kind of reader. Start with crawl access and your own fact pages this month, then build mentions and tracking over the quarter.
